How do you win in a dispute? Or more appropriately, how do you successfully “resolve” a dispute?
One of the secrets of dispute resolution is effective negotiation skills.
One does not win, by pressuring their opponent and by being the aggressor. They win by being the better negotiator.
Negotiation skills are difficult to acquire through education. They’re developed through experience.
A skilled negotiator is prepared to make sacrifices, as they are expecting sacrifices from their opponent. They have the ability to read their opponent and to spot potential openings and weaknesses. They respect their opponent and never underestimate them.
A good negotiator wins even in a surrender, because for them it’s a tactical surrender.
